The environment is a topic that many people are becoming more and more aware of. Now, digital radio manufacturers are making products to help you stay green while you’re listening to your favourite station.
PURE Digital is the first ever digital radio manufacturer to get products endorsed by the Energy Saving Trust. Seven radios have earned this status and these are: PURE Move, EVOKE-1S; Siesta; Chronos II; TEMPUS-1S; ONE Mini and ONE Elite. Find out more about them by searching for Pure in our products section.

These products were tested by an independent panel of experts who checked strict criteria about power usage. The results showed that if you were to use one of PURE’s Energy Saving Recommended products instead of switching on another device just to listen to the radio you would use:
This means that not only are the products environmentally-friendly, they’re also cheaper to run.
PURE is also making other efforts to stay 'green' with its EcoPlus™ scheme. This is a range of twenty products that: use less power, have packaging materials made from recycled and sustainable sources and components that have been designed to minimise their environmental impact.

Roberts Radio has also made a move to reduce the toll on the environment, with its solarDAB product. A first of its kind, this portable radio has a large solar panel which absorbs sunlight and charges the built-in battery pack. Once fully charged, the radio can then run for up to 27 hours. And if the sun’s no longer shining when the battery life is coming to an end, the radio can be recharged by a conventional mains adaptor. It’s available in a choice of colours (white, black, red, green or pink).

Another eco-friendly product comes from Freeplay, the company that developed the world’s first ever wind-up radio in 1996. The range has now been extended to include DAB digital radio with the Freeplay Devo. This product can be powered in three different ways: from mains electricity, the built-in rechargeable battery, or the self-charge solution. The self-charge lets you burn some calories by winding the handle which converts 74% of your own kinetic energy into electricity for the radio. Wind it for 60 seconds and you can listen to 3-5 minutes of digital radio. This means you can entirely avoid using the earth’s resources, even if you might get arm ache after a while!
