The Arqiva Commercial Radio Awards have just been handed out and we're not surprised that the national commercial stations have triumphed again! At a ceremony in Central London on 6th July Absolute Radio, Classic FM, and Planet Rock were all judged winners, along with a special award for one of Smooth Radio’s presenters.

Absolute Radio is having a fantastic year, having bagged a number of golds at the Sony Radio Academy Awards in May. At this latest industry event, the station came away with four more trophies to display. Presenter Ronnie Wood accounts for two of them, winning the categories of ‘Specialist Programme of the Year’ and ‘Newcomer of the Year’. If you’ve not yet listened to this Rolling Stones legend, you’ll find him on air on Absolute Radio every Saturday night from 10pm.

Absolute’s breakfast show presenter Christian O’Connell (who ironically was hosting the evening’s celebrations) also notched up a big win, being judged Breakfast Show of the year. The station’s fourth and final award went to Baddiel and Skinner for their World Cup (2010) podcasts which won Feature of the Year.

Classic FM had reason to celebrate after winning Station of the Year (in the category for stations with a broadcast area of 1 Million+). And the team at Planet Rock also went home smiling after being honoured Digital Station of the Year.

Last, but by no means least came a Lifetime Achievement Award which was handed to David ‘Kid’ Jensen. His distinguished radio and TV career has spanned numerous decades and multiple radio stations (including Planet Rock). You’ll now find him on Smooth Radio, hosting the weekday afternoon show from 1-4pm.

This annual awards event is organised by Arqiva, a company that provides the majority of radio broadcasting infrastructure in the UK. It also owns Digital One, who transmit the national commercial stations on DAB digital radio.
