A few weeks ago we were eagerly looking forward to the Sony Radio Academy Awards (the radio industry’s equivalent of the Baftas). See our earlier story
We’re now delighted to report that three of the national commercial stations had a storming success on the night of glitz and glamour, each coming away with at least one gold.

talkSPORT had a true night to remember, being the proud winner of three separate categories. This included one of the most coveted awards, that of UK station of the year. Having fought off two BBC national stations, there was every reason for the team at talkSPORT to be quietly shedding a tear or two of joy. Commenting on their decision, the judges praised the station’s ‘strong confidence and clear sense of purpose’. They noted that ‘Every programme has direction and a passion and excitement for sport that other stations often lack. With its coverage of major sporting events on limited budgets, the judges felt talkSport displayed impressive achievement in 2010 and as such unanimously agreed that is it a worthy recipient of Station of the Year.’

The two other golden gongs that talkSPORT ran away with on the night were Best promotional/ advertising campaign for its FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa, and the station’s Moz Dee was named Station Programmer of the Year. talkSPORT also bagged a bronze in the station imaging category.

Meanwhile, Absolute Radio clocked up a matching three golds, along with three silvers and one bronze. The top awards were given for three of the station’s personalities: Frank Skinner, Ronnie Wood and Annabel Port.

Named Best entertainment programme The Frank Skinner Show was deemed by the judges to be ‘the whole package: entertaining and engaging. with laugh-out-loud moments. Frank Skinner is a natural host; warm and inclusive, he is fantastic at getting the best from those who appear with him on his show.’ Frank was pipped to the post in the category of Music personality of the year by colleague Ronnie Wood. The judges eloquently stated that ‘Ronnie has lived the life of a thousand men and you feel like a child sitting at his feet as he unfolds his rarefied story book and recounts his great adventures.’ Annabel Port’s win was for Best on-air contributor. The judges liked her ‘inventive and quirky content’ and labelled her ‘a naturally funny storyteller whose contributions are hugely entertaining and perfectly pitched.’

Absolute Radio also headed home clutching silver awards for Geoff Lloyd's Hometime Show, Station imaging and Use of Multiplatform. The Christian O'Connell Breakfast Show was awarded a Bronze.

Classic FM also had a valid reason for bringing out the bubbly when it won best use of branded content for Alex Masterley on Classic FM. The judges were effusive in their praise, stating that ‘This was superb: Inventive, engaging and a truly original way of branding content. Beautifully written, perfectly voiced and targeted. It was funny, intelligent interesting and informative’.

Now you’ve heard what the judges had to say, isn’t it time you tuned in to any or all of these amazing three stations to hear for yourself why they’re such worthy winners.
