Absolute Radio 90s Staying on Air

article date: Wednesday, January 26, 2011

ref: 361

Last year Absolute Radio launched a brand new station dedicated to the music of the 1990s – Absolute Radio 90s. Before long it was being broadcast nationally on DAB digital radio for a trial period. Reaction from listeners and advertisers helped to secure its long term future as we can now confirm that the station will be staying on air across Britain.

The station's bid to triumph music from the 90s has already proved highly popular, as Absolute Radio 90s clocked up a record number of listeners in its recent audience figures survey.

This comes as no suprise to Breakfast Show DJ Christian O’Connell. Prior to the station launching, he asked the question that was on the lips of every self respecting music fan in the 90s – ‘Blur or Oasis?’. Thus the infamous 1995 chart battle between Blur’s ‘Country House’ or Oasis’ ‘Roll With It’ was revived, as O’Connell asked listeners to choose which should be the first song to be played on Absolute Radio 90s.

Christian O'Connell counted the votes and revealed the winner on launch day (21 June 2010). In 1995 Blur won the battle, reaching number 1, but second time round history did not repeat itself and as Christian O’Connell launched Absolute Radio 90s, it was Oasis’ Roll With It that pipped Blur to the top with 58% of votes.

Absolute Radio 90s is Absolute's fourth national offering on DAB alongside the core Absolute Radio station, Absolute Radio 80s and Absolute Radio Extra, the red button service which broadcasts additional sport and comedy content.

A spokesman said launching Absolute Radio 90s on the national DAB platform marks a significant added commitment from Absolute Radio and its owners, Times of India, to the future of digital radio in the UK.
