Planet Rock signs with Digital One

article date: Thursday, October 2, 2008

ref: 304

Multi Sony Award winning radio station Planet Rock has signed a long-term deal with Digital One this week to transmit their programming across Great Britain.

The new deal underlines the commitment by the new independent Planet Rock to expand its audience reach and brand awareness and will act as a positive marker for the digital radio industry as a whole. Planet Rock is shortly moving into new state-of-the-art studios and offices in Marylebone, London. The only Classic Rock Station in the UK has been part of Digital One's line up since November 1999, when DAB digital radio was first launched in the UK.

Owner of Planet Rock Malcolm Bluemel said, "As the leading digital radio station in the UK we plan to cement Planet Rock as the preferred choice of everyone who has a love of radio and good music. The contract with Digital One gives us the ability to do just that. This is the future of radio, you heard it here first!"

Glyn Jones, Acting Chief Executive, Digital One commented, "We’re delighted that Malcolm Bluemel and the Planet Rock team have chosen to extend the successful partnership that’s brought a rock station into millions of British homes. Not to have Planet Rock as part of the national commercial radio line-up would have been unthinkable. This is a great deal for listeners, rock fans and everyone who enjoys sharing breakfast with Alice Cooper."

This news comes on the same day that Planet Rock was honoured as Best Radio Station at the BT Digital Music Awards, trouncing BBC 6 Music, BBC Asian Network, Gaydar Radio and Passion For The Planet. This weekend also sees an exciting new presenter line up at Planet Rock with David Jensen, Darren Redick and celebrated blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa joining the Planet Rock team.

"To be named as Best Radio Station is really special because Planet Rock listeners won this award by voting for us in their thousands, so it belongs to all of us. In the last week, under the new ownership of Malcolm Bluemel, we have left GCap, set up new offices, got a new sales team and started broadcasting from our own studios, so the award is a great way to start Planet Rock's new adventure as a truly independent radio station" said Trevor White, Programming Director, Planet Rock.

Planet Rock was voted Digital Station of the Year at this year’s prestigious Sony Radio Academy Awards. It broadcasts on DAB Digital Radio across the UK and online at www.planetrock.com, playing album-based, guitar-driven classic rock music and featuring bespoke interviews, live recordings and established rock star presenters including Alice Cooper, Tony Iommi, Fish, Phil Manzenera and Rick Wakeman.
