Digital Radio Revolution comes to Teesside

article date: Friday, June 29, 2001

ref: 78

Emap Digital Radio is bringing the digital radio revolution to Teesside when its switches on its Teesside Multiplex on Friday, June 29th.

The cutting edge technology means brighter, clearer radio for listeners.

Emap’s Teesside based TFM, as well as other Emap Performance stations Magic and Kiss will be available in near CD-quality sound – along with Classic Gold (UBC Media), Xfm (Capital), Real Radio (Guardian Media Group) and 3c (Scottish Radio Holdings). There is also space on the multiplex for BBC local service.

The launch of the new multiplex – a special transmitter that can carry selected digital channels – marks another milestone for Emap Digital Radio.

The Teesside multiplex is the fifth wholly owned Emap Digital Radio multiplex to go live following South Yorkshire in October, 2000; Tyne and Wear in November, 2000, Liverpool in February this year and Leeds in May this year.
Shaun Gregory, Sheffield-based Development Director of Emap Performance, said: “Digital is the next chapter in the story of radio. We are delighted to bring further choice to the people of Teesside, which will include Emap’s hugely successful Kiss brand”

Cath Ellington, Managing Director of TFM and Magic 1170, said: “TFM and Magic always aim to be first for innovation and we’re proud to be leading the way in this area. Digital Radio is the future and we’re excited about bringing this new listening experience to Teesside, Co. Durham and North Yorkshire”

Notes to the editor:
Listeners require a special receiver to tune into digital radio stations. The benefits include better sound quality and eventually additional text and graphics-based information services. Emap Digital Radio is part of Emap Performance which is shaping pop culture with the world’s most potent mix of music brands including Big City, Magic and Kiss radio networks; music TV channels including the UK’s number one, The Box and music magazines, Smash Hits, Q, Mojo, mixmag and Kerrang.
